First innovation: comprehensive use of fresh food batch data and GS1 Databar barcodes

Avery Berkel’s latest range of M and MP system scales, with GS1 Databar functionality are set to address a major issue facing many supermarkets today - how to translate the high gross profits and customer appeal of fresh food counters into equally positive net profitability.

A comprehensive solution can be achieved by combining batch level tracking of fresh food deliveries and sales data with the new GS1 Databar format, due to be introduced in 2010.

This new standard has additional data-carrying capability so that counter scales can track and print extended pack information on each counter label. The POS system can then validate and process this information, helping to verify sell-by dates, improve stock rotation and hence reduce waste, compare profitability by supplier and even enable vendor managed inventory.

Achieving these benefits requires truly practical solutions to the integration of data in the store, plus intelligence, printing capability and data organisation in the counter scales. Five years of focused development by Avery Berkel has now made this a reality in the latest range of M and MP system scales.

Second innovation: Weighing, wrapping and labelling from a single source

Retailers looking to cut packing time and reduce maintenance concerns for their in-store packing systems can benefit from Avery Berkel’s new weigh-wrap-label solution called the WA series.

Unlike typical systems that are assembled with a scale and label printer from one manufacturerand a wrapping machine from a second supplier, the WA series is available from a single source, for easier installation and ongoing service.

Thanks to its unique camera-based pack recognition system and single point of control, retailers can cut in-store packing time by up to 30%, meaning that one operator can pack up to 35 packs per minute in a space of just one square metre.

Wrapping film costs are reduced by 25% by using two rolls, with the machine automatically switching between them depending on the pack size and its shape, with no loss of throughput speed. Optimising the film stretch, so there are no wrinkles or distorted packs due to overstretching, improves presentation and customer appeal.
