In the current economic climate, independent retailers need to be highly cost competitive without comprising the customer service and quality that can often set them apart from much larger supermarkets. Avery Berkel’s IX scale is ideal for the busy, local trader looking to cut costs and improve efficiency throughout the store.
The IX offers counter service, electronic cash register functionality and rear-of-store pre-packing in one package, to provide low cost of ownership. In addition, the scale features an innovative label rewind facility which can help owners typically save around 16% on annual consumable costs and eliminate thousands of pounds of label waste each year.
For counter service, up to nine IX scales can be networked, enabling the operator to serve the same customer at any scale along the counter, helping to improve efficiency and avoid queues at a particular machine. Up to 56 Product Look Ups (PLUs) can be stored directly on to the keyboard, enabling the operator to weigh and price the most popular items quickly and easily.
Retailers can also use the IX scale as an electronic cash register for checkout applications. The machine supports the new GS1 barcode standard and can be integrated with most cash drawers and scanners to provide a full ECR system capable of storing up to 1000 PLUs and printing itemised receipts for the customer. It can also support up to five different payment types, which the operator can access at the touch of a button.
Included with every IX machine is Avery Berkel’s MX020 software to enable the retailer to manage all PLUs and label designs from a PC.
The scale is available with six pre-programmed label formats which can be edited via a pc to suit store requirements, including information typically required such as product type, weight and price but also data such as ingredient or allergen warnings or promotional messages. Labels can also be rotated through 90 degrees to achieve the optimum layout.
The scale can function as an easy-to-use self-service machine for fresh food areas. After placing the item on the pan, customers simply select the product via a choice of buttons on the keyboard and a label is issued automatically. For pick and mix counters, where the same price applies to all items, the keyboard can be tailored to show just one key, making product selection fast and simple.
Typically, for every label or receipt printed, retailers use around an extra 10 mm of paper to account for the difference between where the label is torn off and where the thermal print head resumes printing; wasting £1000s in label stock each year. The IX scale is different, offering a label rewind facility that winds the paper back in before printing commences, ensuring that the full length of the label can be used every time.
In addition, retailers can add their own logos to the label design and print on plain labels or continuous adhesive strip to save on the cost of pre-printed label stock.
The compact IX machine comes in a range of configurations to suit store layouts, including the IX100 monoblock for counter or self-service applications and the IX202, with a raised customer and vendor display that makes it ideal for use at the checkout. For standalone applications, the IX110 offers receipt-printing only models without networking.
