Allergen labelling fully supported by Avery Berkel

In recent weeks, several high profile cases involving death from allergen mis-labelling and non-labelling have been reported on by the media. As featured on the 07/11/18 episode of BBC’s Watchdog, what has come to light is the confusion around food allergen labelling.

Due to one legislation element intended to assist smaller businesses, food items prepared on-site do not require allergens to be listed on the product – only a list of allergens needs to be made available upon request. Food items prepared off-site require full allergen labelling on the product.

It is currently optional to only label food items prepared on-site, but retailers are increasingly listing all allergens on all products to be as transparent as possible, allowing customers to make correct and informed purchasing decisions.

Since 2014, Avery Berkel’s current scale families are fully compliant with food allergen labelling legislation, where 14 specific food allergens must be highlighted. This recognised list of food allergens is managed and maintained through MXBusiness – the Avery Berkel scale companion software. As more food allergens are recognised by legislation, MXBusiness can be used to update this list quickly and easily.
