From 3rd June, Waitrose & Partners began an 11 week test at their Botley Road store in Oxford, which has the potential to save thousands of tonnes of unnecessary plastic and packaging.
“Waitrose Unpacked” encourages customers to bring their own re-usable containers to refill from a variety of everyday grocery and household items – from dried pasta and cereals, to wine and cleaning products.
Avery Berkel has supplied all of the weighing equipment to support the test. Customers simply weigh their own containers and fill them with an item and amount of their choice, then weigh once more to generate a final weight and price. Waitrose & Partners is the first of the UK major grocery retailers to provide such a varied initiative, leading to what could become a potential tipping point for reducing food packaging waste on a larger scale.
